Prepositions a/de/en + the personal 'a'

The rule, in plain English

Use a for movement towards a destination and for clock time; de for origin, possession, material, topic and movement from a place; and en for a static location, a general time period and most transport. A + el always contracts to al, and de + el to del, but there is no contraction with la, los, las or the pronoun él. Add the personal a before a specific person, a known group of people or an animal treated as an individual when they are the direct object: Veo a Marta; Quiero a mi perro. It is normally omitted with things, with an unspecified person, and after hay or tener.

Why it's hard for English speakers

English prepositions do not map word-for-word to a, de and en, and English has nothing like the personal a. The key is to learn each Spanish pattern as a unit and first decide whether a noun names a destination, origin, location or specific living direct object.
