Por vs Para
The rule, in plain English
PARA points forward: purpose, destination, deadline, recipient ('in order to', 'for someone'). POR points to cause/means/exchange/duration ('because of', 'through', 'by', 'in exchange for'). Rule of thumb: PARA = goal, POR = reason.
Why it's hard for English speakers
English collapses both into 'for'. You have to ask 'is this a goal (para) or a cause/means (por)?'
