The imperative (commands)
The rule, in plain English
For affirmative tú commands, use the 3rd-person present form: habla, come, escribe (some irregulars: ven, pon, haz, di, sal, ten, ve). For negative tú commands and all usted commands, use the present subjunctive: no hables, hable usted, no coma.
Why it's hard for English speakers
English commands are just the bare verb ('eat!'). Spanish changes the ending, and negative commands jump into the subjunctive.
