Topic 6

The three pasts: indefinido, perfecto, imperfecto

Practise this topic

The rule, in plain English

Spanish chooses a past tense according to how the speaker presents an action. Use the pretérito indefinido for a completed whole or foreground event that moves a story forward. Use the imperfecto for habits, descriptions, states, and actions already in progress—the background of a story. Use the pretérito perfecto compuesto for a completed action connected to the present or placed inside a period the speaker treats as current. Time words are useful clues, but the intended viewpoint decides the tense.

Why it's hard for English speakers

English often uses one simple past where Spanish distinguishes a completed event from the situation surrounding it. A phrase such as ayer does not choose the tense by itself: Ayer llovió todo el día views the rain as complete, while Ayer, a las ocho, llovía places us inside it. Present-perfect usage also varies: Spain commonly uses he comido with a current period such as hoy, while much of Latin America also naturally uses comí for a completed action today.

Choose the viewpoint, not just a trigger word

Common mistakes

  • Use indefinido whenever the sentence says ayer.Choose by viewpoint: Ayer llovió todo el día / Ayer a las ocho llovía.A time expression helps establish context, but a completed whole and an ongoing background require different viewpoints.
  • Dormí cuando sonó el teléfono.Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. If sleeping was already in progress, use imperfecto for the background and indefinido for the interruption.
  • Every completed action today must use he + participle.Hoy he comido / Hoy comíThe perfecto is especially common in Spain for a current period; the indefinido is also normal in much of Latin America.
  • De niño jugué is always incorrect.De niño jugaba mucho / De niño jugué una final en Madrid.Imperfecto gives a habit; indefinido can present one completed childhood event.
